FRAM'

In the spring of 2021, we won a public competition to modernize FRAM's customer and user interfaces and also ensure the transition from old technology to new based on Entur. FRAM is the brand for the public transport services of Møre og Romsdal County Council. Until 2024, when all buses and boats in Møre og Romsdal have switched to the new platform, we will assist FRAM with development and design.

For a period of almost two years, there will be both old and new equipment on the buses. One of our projects is about ensuring that travel products purchased on the new platform will work on the old one and vice versa. This is an exciting project involving NFC technology, APP development and good old-fashioned integration work.

This transitional phase presents unique challenges and opportunities for the public transport system. The integration of old and new technologies requires careful planning and execution to ensure a seamless experience for passengers. The use of NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is particularly promising, as it allows for contactless transactions and quick validation of tickets across different systems. This not only enhances convenience for users but also helps streamline the boarding process, potentially reducing delays and improving overall service efficiency.

The development of a new app that can interface with both old and new systems is a critical component of this project. This app will serve as a bridge between the two platforms, allowing passengers to purchase and use tickets regardless of the equipment installed on the bus they board. The integration work involved in this project goes beyond mere technical compatibility; it requires a deep understanding of user needs and behaviors to create an intuitive interface that can handle the complexities of the dual system without confusing or frustrating passengers. As the project progresses, it will likely serve as a valuable case study for other transport authorities facing similar technological transitions.

FRAM will use an Entur-based platform for ticketing, trip planning and real-time display. On top of this, a separate online shop and FRAM app will be created for Møre og Romsdal. This is being done in collaboration with several other county councils, including Trøndelag.

The implementation of this integrated system is expected to significantly enhance the user experience for public transport passengers in Møre og Romsdal. By leveraging the Entur platform, FRAM will be able to provide seamless journey planning, accurate real-time information, and convenient ticketing options across various modes of transportation. This unified approach aims to simplify travel for residents and visitors alike, encouraging greater use of public transport in the region.

Moreover, the collaboration with other county councils, particularly Trøndelag, presents an opportunity for knowledge sharing and resource optimization. This partnership is likely to result in a more robust and efficient system, benefiting from shared expertise and potentially reducing overall development and maintenance costs. As the project progresses, it is anticipated that the new FRAM app and online shop will become valuable tools for travelers, offering personalized services, easy ticket purchases, and up-to-date travel information tailored specifically to the needs of Møre og Romsdal's public transport users.
